Leading with Insight

"The impact of your leadership is proportional to the quality of your self-awareness."

The Six Human Needs framework, popularised by Tony Robbins, is a powerful tool for leaders to develop self-awareness and enhance their leadership abilities. This framework demonstrates that all human behaviour is driven by the motivation to meet one of six fundamental needs:

Certainty: assurance you can avoid pain and gain pleasure; comfort, safety, control, what’s going to happen next, predictability.

Uncertainty/Variety: the need for the unknown, change, and new stimuli

Significance: feeling unique, essential, special or needed, respected, Do I matter?

Connection/Love: a strong feeling of closeness or union with someone or something

Growth: an expansion of capacity, capability or understanding

Contribution: a sense of service and focus on helping, giving to and supporting others, being part of something bigger than yourself

By understanding these needs in themselves and others, leaders can gain profound insights into motivations, decision-making processes, and behavioural patterns. This awareness allows leaders to recognise how their own needs influence their leadership style and interactions with team members.

For instance, a leader might realise their strong need for certainty, which leads them to micromanage or hold back delegating, stifling their team's creativity and growth. Armed with this knowledge, they can consciously adjust their approach to better balance their needs with those of their team.

On the other extreme, some leaders protect their teams, finding it difficult to hold each other accountable. The need for connection may drive some, while others continue to pick up the pieces as a means to feel significant. The deeper fear is whether they would still be valuable if they were not there to save the day.

Moreover, understanding the Six Human Needs enables leaders to become more empathetic ‘coaches’, as they can identify which needs are driving their team members' behaviours and tailor their coaching strategies accordingly.

This personalised approach helps leaders create more meaningful connections, provide more effective support, and inspire their team members to reach their full potential. Ultimately, mastering this framework empowers leaders to create a work environment that satisfies these fundamental human needs, leading to increased engagement, productivity, and overall well-being within their teams.
